Dr Andrew Carroll is a Senior Marine Ecologist and science leader at Geoscience Australia with over 20 years of research experience in marine biodiversity conservation and the assessment of anthropogenic stressors on marine ecosystems. Andrew completed a Bachelor of Applied Science and a PhD at Southern Cross University, where his research focused on coral reproduction and larval ecology across the Great Barrier Reef, Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia and French Polynesia. Since joining Geoscience Australia in 2012, Dr Carroll has applied his scientific and management expertise across multiple Australian Government initiatives related to the stewardship of Australia’s marine jurisdiction. His work provides scientific advice to support environmental decision‑making for offshore renewable energy development, sub‑seabed geological storage of CO₂, and the assessment of potential impacts from low‑frequency underwater noise on marine fish and invertebrates. Andrew has extensive expertise in seabed mapping and benthic habitat characterisation spanning shallow, rariphotic, mesophotic and abyssal environments. He has led and contributed to numerous national and international seabed mapping programs and plays a key role in delivering national marine biodiversity datasets through Australia’s National Environmental Science Program (NESP) Marine and Coastal Hub and other Geoscience Australia initiatives. Andrew is recognised for working at the nexus of marine ecology, geoscience and environmental policy, translating complex scientific evidence into impactful outcomes that support national conservation objectives and regulatory frameworks.
